Morningstar Living partners with AERC Recycling Solutions in Allentown, Pennsylvania to streamline our electronics recycling needs. As part of their Zero-Waste-to-Landfill policy, AERC guarantees 100% recycling and reuse of electronics equipment such as computer monitors, hard drives, keyboards, printers and fax machines.
Usable waste from salad bars, meals, food preparation, coffee grounds, grass clippings, shredded paper and saw dust from our wood shop are placed in compost tumblers to be made into compost for the grounds and resident gardens.
In an effort to reduce energy use and increase energy efficiency Morningstar Living has participated in FirstEnergy’s Energy Rebate program through installation of high efficiency heating and air conditioning equipment, lighting equipment and control and special food service equipment and controls.
Morningstar Living residents and team members work together to recycle paper, aluminum, styrofoam and glass products, as well as lightbulbs and batteries. A color-coded system is used to collect recyclable products.
Morningstar Living works with NaturaLawn of America to control pests by using natural biological controls and spot treatment of problem areas, as opposed to traditional “blanket” applications of chemicals that are harmful to the environment. The environmental benefits include increased microorganism activity, increased earthworm activity and less stress on grass plants and root systems.
The Pleasure Garden at Moravian Hall Square has been designated as a Native Plant Sanctuary. Resident David Kline spearheaded an initiative to bring back native plants to the bank of the pond within the Pleasure Garden. This initiative was completed with the help of the Lehigh Valley Gap Nature Center, the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation and Lehigh Valley Greenways.
Morningstar Living’s future sustainability initiatives include: solar panels for heating, hybrid or electric cars, energy efficient lighting and eco-friendly building materials.
